Media Roundup

I had some feedback from a Club member about this Size 00 issue and they said they agreed with me that curves are much more attractive. Anyway further on this subject, I happen to buy a copy of OK magazine this week, primarily because there were pictures of John Barrowman tying the knot with his partner at a Civil Partnership Ceremony and those of you who have listened to previous pod casts will know that I am not deterred by the fact that he is gay. I think he is gorgeous and he was wearing a kilt for the ceremony and I think men in kilts look really sexy. Ron wore a kilt for our wedding. There was a photo of the happy couple with their 3 dogs. One of the dogs was a wedding present to each other instead of rings. Isn’t that great?

In the magazine there was more gossip on the same theme of pets. Dita Von Teese who you may remember Ron and I saw perform at Erotica, has split up with her husband Marilyn Manson leaving the house and taking the pets with her. Apparently there is a now going to be a custody battle over the pets. Manson wants the cats back.

Anyway I digress. In this copy of OK magazine, there was a photo of Nicole Ritchie who you will remember I mentioned as being this size double zero. She was in a bikini and it was not a pretty sight. I don’t think she was wearing the top to hide her bust but the sunken chest and rib cage. To say it was “unattractive” is an understatement. It was revolting. There was a photo of her when she weighed more, she looked much better and it was difficult to recognise her as the same person. That is definitely someone with an eating disorder. It was enough to send you in search of the doughnuts.

This article also contained pictures of other before and after celebrity photos. There was Teri Hatcher from Desperate Housewives also looking painfully thin.

Then after criticising women for being too thin, there were “before and “after” photographs of to those who had put on a few pounds over Christmas.

And although there were two men featured in this magazine, it was mainly women’s bodies being compared and it struck me that no wonder some of these women in the media have eating disorders when magazines print pictures of you stating how fat you have become. At the other extreme from Nicole Ritchie was Michelle McManus who you may or may not remember won Pop Idol. Well she was a big girl then and there was a photo of her in a swimsuit. They said at that stage she weighed 23 st and she has now lost over 10 st and is aiming to lose more according to the article. So if I had eaten that doughnut I’d would have been feeling desperate now. But as I have just got into a pair of jeans I haven’t worn for 3 years I am feeling pretty good right now.

The article aimed to validate itself by quoting dieticians and doctors commenting on these people being underweight or conversely overweight and the long-term health risks they posed. Which was all fine but I couldn’t help thinking that there was a certain and no pun intended here” prurient” aspect to the whole thing.

Last week I caught the end of a programme, late on Channel 5 where else? which followed a British couple who went to Holland for the weekend to go to the Famous Swingers Club in Rotterdam. This was quite interesting in that it was reported in a very balanced matter of fact way, with little of the usual “sensationalist” moral judgements that normally accompany these types of productions. Did anyone else see it? I would be interested to hear what you thought about it.

On a previous podcast, I talked about Polyamory and a documentary programme on the subject. This TV programme was transmitted again this week and I wanted to read you a comment sent in by one of our club members who responded after listening to that pod cast

She said:-

I listened to your pod cast about polyamory, which was > very interesting. I had never heard of it before I listened to your > programme. I would like to tell you my feelings. You said in your broadcast > that some believe swingers could be classed as polyamorist (if that is the > correct term) But I don’t think this is the case. When it comes to Mormons > and others who practice it they do it out of emotional love (so they lead > us to believe)And although a lot of swingers do have regular couples they > meet they don’t, or should not, become emotionally involved with them, i.e. > they don’t fall in love with the other couples and just use the meetings > for sexual fun. So in my opinion the word polyamory should not be used on > swingers sites. Of course some couples only like to meet with single women > or men but I don’t believe they fall in love with the single person, maybe > one of the couple could in which case it would turn into an affair. > Yes I think I agree with you, that swingers are usually emotionally detached and it is only when couples become too emotionally involved that you get problems. Jealously should not really be part of it, but it is an issue talked about regularly with polyamory. If you want to listen to the original article on polyamory you can down load Pod cast No. 8 on October 15th 2006.

I have quite a long drive to work and Ron downloads other pod shows onto a disk so that I can listen to them in the car. One I listened to is called “Sex is Fun” and this week it was very interesting as they talked about male circumcision.

After covering the it in the context of historical, cultural, religious rituals and traditions around male circumcision, the pod cast went on to talk about it in the modern context. In the USA it has been customary to circumcise baby boys not sure for, well not sure how long, but I suppose for the last couple of generations, for “hygienic” reasons. No body trusts little boys and perhaps men to wash they Willys properly! Here in the UK and Europe we maybe haven’t put so much emphasis on hygiene maybe, I don’t know, circumcision is not the norm. I have only ever seen circumcised penises in pictures in magazines.

On this podcast, they also discussed the ethical dilemma that obviously a baby cannot give consent on having the procedure and described how it is done, poor little baby I thought.

Anyway for the circumcised male, the down side of this practice is that because the tip of the penis is always exposed, it becomes de-sensitised and this can reduce sexual pleasure. Well if you are a circumcised male and want a foreskin back there is something you can do about it without resorting to surgery. There are now products on the market that you can attach to what is left of the foreskin which weights it down and essentially stretches it over time. Apparently the body can re-grow skin and by using these products and a bit of patience, the man doing the pod cast said it would take about 3 years, you can have a foreskin back.

Apparently there is also quite a lot of information on the Internet now about the pros and cons of circumcision, so that parents are able to make more informed decisions about this subject and there is some movement away from everyone doing it now. Anyway it was a very interesting article and if you are interested in listening to it you can down load it from Sex is Fun. A link to this is in my show notes.
